"Books Are Celebrations" is really
a one-person variety show co-created by the audience in celebration of
books. ("Books Are Celebrations of everything in the world
In
everything, there's a story, waiting to be unfurled.") The program
entertains all ages with a mix of songs and folktales led by Maichack,
and includes audience-participants in a dance, a costumed play, even kids
on puppets. Maichack sings catchy, original songs about the fun of the
library and power of reading.

As Maichack sings and plays guitar, she
invites the audience to join in the refrains and clap along. The play
is performed in the moment under Maichack's guidance and narration, with
some audience children donning beautiful and funny costumes. The story
is based on Robert Munsch's book, The Paper Bag Princess. There are a
prince, princess and dragon, with wild wigs and hats, even a paper bag
dress in this funny, fractured fairly tale. It is designed to be lots
of fun for ages 4 through adult and is about an hour long. As the grand
finale, two children will help make a limberjack puppet dance as Ms. Maichack
plays the fiddle.
"Books Are Celebrations" comes in audiocassette
form, available at the program. The recording won a 1999 National Parenting
Publications Gold Award for storytelling and literacy. She will also offer
"Howlarious Halloween, Ghost Stories, Songs & Jokes from the
Crypt" for sale at the show.
